A sodium hypochlorite solution of between 10% and 17% can be obtained by diluting it in water to different percentages depending on its intended use.

Chlorine gas (Cl2) is produced in the membrane electrolysers, which is then absorbed with caustic soda in the Chlorine Absorption unit, resulting in the production of sodium hypochlorite.

Due to its fungicidal and bactericidal properties, the main application of sodium hypochlorite is in the purification of water for human consumption, although it is also used as a bleach for textile fibres, and in other sectors for the cleaning and disinfection of swimming pools and other environments. 

Despite its use becoming more and more widespread and being an expanding market, its handling and delivery entail risks, and even its transport is restricted in some countries. Consequently there is a growing demand for it to be produced locally in electrolysis plants.

Our specialisation in the production of sodium hypochlorite focuses on the manufacture of a highly effective and stable solution of sodium hypochlorite, with an active chlorine concentration above 14% between 12% and 15%. This process is achieved by the carefully controlled reaction of chlorine with an aqueous sodium hydroxide solution, ensuring a concentration expressed in active chlorine by volume that guarantees maximum disinfectant efficacy. The resulting solution is slightly alkaline (pH 12.0-13.0), which contributes to its potency and stability, although it is important to note that the product is unstable with time and temperature increases, requiring careful handling and storage to preserve its efficacy.

Quality and safety in the production of sodium hypochlorite are guaranteed by strict composition and purity controls. We ensure that the sodium hypochlorite content remains within the optimum range of 12-15% active chlorine, with a maximum of 6.0 gpl sodium hydroxide and 3.0 gpl sodium chlorate to avoid adverse reactions. In addition, we maintain minimum levels of impurities such as iron (max. 0.5 ppm) and nickel (max. 0.05 ppm) to prevent product degradation and ensure product safety in industrial applications. With regard to safety, we adopt the safety measures recommended in the safety data sheet to protect operators and the environment when handling the product.

The sodium hypochlorite produced in our facilities has wide sanitary (industrial) applications thanks to its disinfectant properties. It is mainly used in water purification, swimming pool treatment, and in the manufacture of bleaches and other biocides. Its high concentration of active chlorine makes it especially effective in the elimination of pathogens and in large-scale cleaning and sanitising processes, meeting the safety and efficacy standards required for these critical uses.
